Carlsbad Caverns National Park

By Jul 22nd 2010 No Comments »

It’s been called the ‘Grand Canyon with a roof on it’ and Ansel Adams once described this park as “something that should not exist in relation to human beings. Something that is as remote as the galaxy, incomprehensible as a nightmare, and beautiful in spite of everything.”

Carlsbad Caverns is an underground oasis of things you’ve never seen before.

Even before entering the cave at the Natural Entrance, you walk amongst hundreds of cave swallows – birds that swoop and swarm over your head. This experience was the perfect prelude to what was about to come as we started the decline into the shadowy cave.

Descending quickly into darkness and into a world untouched by light, we made our way 800 feet below sea level surrounded by delicate natural limestone decorations. There were soda straws, popcorn covered stalagmites and lion’s tails.  It is a world to be defined by your imagination.  We walked past a fairy garden, a ghost’s face and many different animals. It was a magical experience; each step provided a glimpse into what this underworld looked like when it was submerged by water.  It was peaceful yet boisterous. We took many opportunities to stop and fully absorb our surroundings, because we both believe we will never see anything like the magic inside Carlsbad Caverns anywhere else in the world.  While in the cave, you can let go of everything and take in the wonder of this astonishing natural phenomenon.

We truly hope that if you have the opportunity, you take the trip to New Mexico and see this magic first hand.
